Tarangire Overview
Tarangire contains a mix of habitats including grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands. During the dry season from June to October, many animals migrate to Tarangire’s permanent river, the Tarangire River, as water becomes scarce elsewhere. This concentration of wildlife around the river makes Tarangire a prime spot for game viewing. Thousands of elephants, wildebeest, zebras, buffalos, impalas, gazelles, hartebeest, and elands gather seeking water. The park is also home to over 550 bird species, making it a top birding destination.
Some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife viewing occurs along the Tarangire River. The river is lined with ancient baobab trees which provide shade and nutrients for animals. Safari goers can spot crocodiles lurking in the river waiting to snatch a wandering zebra or wildebeest. Over 300 elephants a day come down to drink at the river, making it an ideal place to observe herds interacting and caring for their young. With its abundance of wildlife, immense baobab trees, and river teeming with activity, Tarangire offers a quintessential African safari experience.
