Arusha City Overview
The city lies between the rugged Mount Meru and fertile farmland. Arusha has a temperate climate and the surrounding areas are lush and green. Just outside the city are the coffee plantations that produce some of Tanzania’s best coffee. To the north of Arusha lies Serengeti National Park, home of the famous annual wildebeest migration. Not far from the city are also Ngorongoro Crater and Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.
Arusha was originally a small agricultural center inhabited by the Waarusha tribe. In the early 1900s, Arusha became a provincial administrative center due to its central location. German colonizers established farms around Mount Meru. After World War I when Tanzania was under British control, Arusha continued growing as an administrative and commercial center. The city has an international airport and is a major transit point for tourists visiting northern Tanzania.
Today, Arusha is a bustling regional hub. Many businesses have locations in Arusha to serve the tourism industry. Luxury hotels, safari companies, tour operators and other services catering to tourists are abundant. Though it retains a small-town feel, Arusha offers modern amenities and conveniences needed to support the tourism boom.
