Arusha is a city in northern Tanzania, located at the foot of Mount Meru. Arusha is the fourth largest city in Tanzania. Arusha is the capital of the Arusha Region and is best known as the gateway to some of Tanzania’s most famous natural attractions.

The city lies between the rugged Mount Meru and fertile farmland. Arusha has a temperate climate and the surrounding areas are lush and green. Just outside the city are the coffee plantations that produce some of Tanzania’s best coffee. To the north of Arusha lies Serengeti National Park, home of the famous annual wildebeest migration. Arusha was originally a small agricultural center inhabited by the Waarusha tribe. In the early 1900s, Arusha became a provincial administrative center due to its central location. German colonizers established farms around Mount Meru. After World War I when Tanzania was under British control, Arusha continued growing as an administrative and commercial center. The city has an international airport and is a major transit point for tourists visiting northern Tanzania.

By Air

Arusha has an international airport, Arusha Airport (ARK), located about 8 km from the city center. There are daily flights from Nairobi, Kenya as well as flights from other major African cities like Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Airlines like Precision Air, Fastjet, and Ethiopian Airlines offer services.

By Road

Arusha is well connected to other cities in northern Tanzania by road. There are public shuttle buses that run daily from Nairobi, Kenya. Tour companies also offer private van transfers from Nairobi or Moshi. Within Tanzania, you can take public buses from Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and other major hubs.

By Train

While Tanzania does have a railway system, there is currently no passenger train service to Arusha. The most accessible train is from Dar es Salaam to Moshi, then take a bus from Moshi to Arusha.
