Lake Eyasi Overview

Lake Eyasi is a large salt lake located in the northern part of Tanzania’s Great Rift Valley. Situated between the Eyasi Escarpment and the Kiderlen Mountains, Lake Eyasi lies at an elevation of 960 meters above sea level. The lake covers an area of 230 square kilometers, though its size varies greatly depending on the season and annual rainfall.

Lake Eyasi is considered a soda lake as its waters have high alkalinity. The water of the lake has a pH ranging from 9 to 10.5 due to the presence of sodium carbonate. The high salt content means the lake can support very little aquatic life, though some algae and brine shrimp are found in its waters. Flamingos and other waterbirds utilize Lake Eyasi seasonally when less saline water conditions allow.

The area around Lake Eyasi has been inhabited by hunter-gatherer groups for millennia. The Hadza people have lived near the shores of Lake Eyasi for thousands of years, surviving by hunting game and gathering plant foods from the rich riparian environment surrounding the lake. Lake Eyasi lies within the Lake Eyasi Game Controlled Area which protects populations of buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and antelope. Though a remote area, Lake Eyasi does draw some tourists who are interested in witnessing the traditional lifestyle of the Hadza people.

How to get there?

The last stretch to the lake will be challenging but the dramatic views and scenery make it worthwhile. A visit to Lake Natron requires careful trip planning and transport arrangements due to its isolated location. Here is the most detailed information if you are looking for the best way to reach Lake Natron.

By Vehicle

If flying to one of the local airstrips is too costly, the overland route from Arusha is a cheaper but longer option. Hire a reliable 4×4 vehicle and driver in Arusha to make the 6-8 hour drive to Lake Eyasi. The route takes you through small towns like Karatu and Mang’ola before descending down the steep escarpment roads into the rift valley itself. The roads are a mixture of paved highways and rough dirt/gravel roads so a 4×4 is recommended, especially during wet conditions. Make sure to stock up on petrol and supplies as facilities are limited around the lake itself. Carry spare tires and emergency equipment as you’ll be far from major towns. With an early start, you can reach Lake Eyasi before nightfall.

By Air

The most common route is to fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Arusha. There are regular flights to JRO from Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, and other major cities in East Africa. From JRO you can take a short 1 hour flight on a small plane to one of the local airstrips like Mang’ola Airstrip. Charter flights can also be booked to some of the private airstrips nearer to Lake Eyasi. Landing at one of these small rural airstrips cuts out the long overland drive.
